Benefits Of musicTherapy

musictherapy uses musicto promote positive changes in the wellbeing of an individual. These positive changes may be manifested in changes in physical development, social and interpersonal development, emotional or spiritual wellbeing or cognitive abilities.

The therapeutic benefits of musichave been known and harnessed since ancient times. However, musictherapy in modern times dates back to the World Wars when musicwas used in hospitals in the rehabilitation and recovery of soldiers who had suffered physical or emotional trauma. The University of Kansas was the first University in the United States to offer a degree program in musictherapy in 1944.

Early exponents of musictherapy in the 1950's to 1970's included the French cellist Juliet Alvin and Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins. The Nordoff-Robbins approach is still used in many countries around the world including the USA, UK, Australia, Germany and South Africa.

So, how does musictherapy work?

musicis universal and connects across language barriers. Most people can respond to musicin some way regardless of illness or disability.

musichas an inherent ability to generate an emotional response in the listener. It stimulates a relaxation response which can therefore lead to physiological changes in the body. musicis known to reduce stress thereby producing related benefits such as lower blood pressure, improved respiration, reduced heart rate, better cardiac performance and reduced tension in muscles.

musicis processed in both hemispheres of the brain and this stimulation has been shown to help in development of language and speech functions. It promotes socialization and development of communication, self expression and motor skills. Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder have been found to respond very positively to musicand many of them display high levels of musical skill.

musicencourages verbal as well as non verbal communication and promotes social interaction and relatedness. It's a valuable outlet for self expression and creativity. It has also been successfully used in pain management by providing a distraction from the painful stimulus as well as a means of relaxation and stress alleviation.

Children with developmental and learning difficulties, children and adults with autism spectrum disorder or special needs as well as the elderly and dementia sufferers have all been shown to benefit from musictherapy. Although the benefits of musictherapy have been accepted intuitively and based on anecdotal evidence it wasn't till recently that quantitative evidence of its efficacy started to emerge.

In a recent study conducted by the University of Miami School of Medicine blood samples of a group of male Alzheimer's patients who were treated with musictherapy were found to have significantly elevated levels of melatonin, epinephrine and norepinephrine which are chemicals which act on the brain to control mood, depression, aggression and sleep. The benefits of the therapy were still evident even six weeks after cessation of the therapy and in the case of melatonin the effects persisted even longer.

musictherapy is gaining wider acceptance in the general medical community and has certainly stood the test of time. musictherapists can now be found practicing in a variety of institutions dealing with mental health, developmental and early intervention programs, correctional institutions and special education programs to name but a few. Many are having success where traditional treatment methods have failed.

All About Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are a hardy and resilient pest, despised by most who have encountered them. Getting rid of bed bugs has been a problem documented as early as medieval times in Europe or during the time of Aristotle in Greece. Bed bugs are smart creatures that choose to move when the target least knows it, often attacking when a person is fast asleep, unaware of their silent assailant. Every person will have his own version of a bed bug story and most likely it will be bad.

Further information about this charming creature tells us that bed bugs are scientifically known as Cimex lectularius. They are wingless with a brownish, ultra-thin body. Various studies indicate these creatures originated from Asia but unfortunately, they can now be seen in all parts of the world. Bed bugs thrive in areas with a warm and dry climate but they have been able to invade the northern regions because of the proliferation of heated buildings. So there is something to be said about living in a cold house. Heating keeps you and your family toasty; so too the bed bugs!

The adult bed bug is ј to 3/8 in length when it is unfed but its size will expand considerably after a hearty meal. (Much like a human after a buffet dinner!) A starving bed bug looks far more different compared to one that is well fed. Young bed bugs or nymphs resemble the adults but have a yellowish color after molting. A nymph can develop into a fully grown bed bug as fast as one month depending on how much it is able to eat, which is not the most pleasant of thoughts.

When they become a pest

Bed bugs start to become a problem when they become hungry for blood, though frankly they will never be a particularly desirable resident in your house. They typically stay in their homes in between meals and are only forced to go out if they are starving. The warmth of a nearby body is what attracts them they can detect a food source up to approximately 5-10cm away.

Bed bugs use their highly developed mouthparts to bite and suck blood from the skin of an unsuspecting person. Engorgement time can last as long as seven minutes or as short as one minute. An adult bed bug can absorb around seven times of its own body weight in blood. The bed bug immediately retreats to its hiding place after feasting and then lays eggs again.

A person will only realize that he has been bitten by a bed bug once he discovers the large wheals in the affected part of the body. These wheals eventually develop into a tiny read mark that will stay for at least two to three days.

Bed bug bites can also be distinguished by the orderly way the wheals are formed, unlike mosquito bites that have a random pattern. It is always advised that the affected area should never be scratched to avoid infection and immediately washed with soap and water.

Bed bugs do prefer any part of the body that has good blood flow so, sorry to say, the reproductive organs will always be included in their list of target spots.

Solving 'em bugs

Treating bed bug bites is only a small part of solving the problem, as the next step is actually getting rid of these unwanted visitors. Those often traveling to areas with a tropical climate are very susceptible to bed bug infestations, as the luggage they carry might become their new home. Seeing bed bugs crawl into boxes, suitcases and belongings is very difficult, as they are tiny, agile and cryptic. Homes not yet infested could inherit this problem from the use of second hand furniture, couches or beds.

Those that want to get rid of bed bugs in beds will have a difficult task at hand. Fabrics with holes and tears are perfect locations for them to lay eggs. During the 40s and 50s the use of DDT, which was developed as the first of the modern insecticides early in World War II, was popular, as it helped minimize the spread of bed bug infestations but was eventually outlawed due to concerns over their effects to humans.

Pest control firms have a wide array instruments to help get rid of beg bugs ranging from pesticides, aerosols and other chemical agents. Beds in poor condition or heavily infested should be automatically discarded. Regardless if the bed is thrown out or not, encasing the box spring and mattress is very helpful especially if the bugs are still there.

Vacuuming could also help in getting rid of bed bugs and some pest control experts even use portable steam machines to treat beds. Whether the infestation is minor or major, bed bugs are always a pest especially for those that want to get a good nights sleep. Perhaps, the most effective way to avoid a bed bug problem is to practice good hygiene and observe cleanliness.

Beat the Summer Heat - What Size A/C Do I Need?

A larger air conditioner will not always provide more cooling. It should be sized for the room area. If properly sized it should operate long enough to remove moisture from the air. It is the moisture removed from the room which actually produces the feeling of cooling. Unfortunately many people in their rush to purchase a window air conditioner buy too large a model.

Too large a unit can actually provide less cooling than a smaller, properly sized unit. This is because with an oversized air conditioner its run time is too short. Consequently it does not remove enough moisture from the room to produce a feeling of comfort. If youre A/C seems to cycle off and then back on every few minutes and does a poor job of cooling, it is probably oversized for the room.

Air conditioners are rated in BTUs. British Thermal Units are a measurement of how much heat is being transferred form the room being cooled to where the heat is dumped out of doors. This is why the cooing coil inside the room is cool to the touch, while the part that hangs outside is extremely hot.

A window air conditioner used in the average household room can be as low as 4000 BTU. While 5000, 6000, and 8000 are the most common sizes purchased.

How do I determine what size A/C I need? Following is a basic sizing chart for calculating the window air conditioner needed for a room. Calculate the size of the room by multiplying the width of the room by the length of the room. Use your room size to determine what BTU's are required to cool that particular room size.

room in sq ft-----room in sq m-----A/C size in BTU's

100 250............9 23............5000 6000

250 400...........23 37............6000 8500

400 550...........37 51............8000 11000

550 875...........51 81...........11000 15000

Based on a room occupied by two adults, having an average insulation, number of windows, and sun exposure.

Which is the best room for placement of an air conditioner?

Wherever it gives the most comfort is where it should be installed. If you only have one air conditioner then we usually suggest the bedroom. This is because most people find that if they can sleep comfortably during a hot summer night then their next days work will be a lot easier. Getting through a hot day at work becomes a lot easier when you know you will sleep comfortably that night.

Some people do not like a cool sleeping environment so they will tend to place it in a living room or family room. Or some people will place it in the family room because the whole family can sleep there. Get out the sleeping bags and turn it into an adventure for the young ones. Beats waking up in the morning to find a dog, cat, and four kids in the bed with you.

Also window air conditioner can be noisy, which may disturb sleep. Others find the drone of the fan actually promotes sleep because all the neighbourhood noises are drowned out. Some people say the air conditioner works as well as a sleeping pill

But whichever room you eventually pick dont expect the impossible from youre A/C. It is not meant to cool more than one room or one open area. Air conditioners will not cool other rooms? This is because the blower in a window air conditioner is not very powerful. It is sized to cool one open area, not a number of interconnected rooms. Therefore once again a couple of smaller units may be better for your home than one large unit.

Lastly, remember to properly secure the air conditioner in the window. Once installed a piece of wood to stop the window from being lifted up is a good idea. If you have wooden sills the simple addition of a wood screw at the top of the raised window (the one you had to raise to install the A/C) will only take a minute. Otherwise an intruder could gain access to the house by lifting the window and letting the A/C fall out. This could result in the loss of both your valuables and the air conditioner.

Sheds - Not Just For storage!

Today you will find that sheds come in all types of shapes, different sizes and even diverse materials. There is a vast assortment of sheds with innumerable purposes that they can be used for. You can use them for a home office space, personal home gym or even a spa area for your home.

Traditionally, sheds are thought to be primarily for storage for items such as pocket bikes, ATVs, motorcycles, yard equipment, gardening tools, outside furniture and various other things. With the vast selection of different styles of sheds that are available to today, you are not restricted to using these buildings just for storage anymore!

One popular use is a dedicated workshop area. These sheds are tailored to meet the needs of having a dedicated workshop area. For example, these buildings are usually constructed with a more elevated roofline than typical sheds. This makes it easier to walk around and maneuver when using the building as a workshop area. Another great feature of these types of buildings is the double doors for easy access in and out of the unit. Glazed windows give them a nice airy and open feeling and enable you to enjoy the scenery while completing workshop tasks.

With the increased knowledge of how important it is to get fit, sheds are being used as personal gyms and even spas. Like the workshops, ones with elevated rooflines make working out comfortable while not taking up a lot of the space inside your home. These personal workout buildings enable you to feel like youre getting away from home to go workout in your own private gym. With the cost of gas and gym memberships, sheds made into personal home gyms end up paying for themselves. Best of all, its easy to walk across your yard to go to your personal gym instead of having to drive across town in traffic congestion and often times bad weather. Youre more likely to stick with your exercise routine having a sheds that have been converted to personal, home gyms.

As you can see, sheds are not just for storage and plants anymore. Theyre not restricted solely to gardeners. You can enjoy the benefits of having sheds that are easily converted into a dedicated workshop, home spa or even a personal gym! A huge benefit to these types of sheds is the money that you save because the area will be used so often by you and your family.

BuyaShed specialize in sheds garages, carports, farm sheds, workshops, garden sheds and much more and we deliver FREE to 100 local depots Australia wide.

Notes on the Roll Collar

A roll collar jacket has such a fluid and smooth look. The roll collar itself is so fluid that the roll collar looks like a real extension of the bodice. Yes collars and revers should be extensions of the jacket bodice but in the roll collar jacket, there is no revers. There is just one smooth roll collar. There is the continual fluid 'roll' line.

A roll collar jacket is a good beginning to learning about collars as well as jackets. The roll collar rolls from its breakpoint where the first button is around the neck and then almost in a full sweep rolls around the neck to the other side. The collar that rolls is an extension of the jacket fabric but because there is that appearance of a smooth roll all around, it really appears that the roll collar is an extension of the bodice fabric unlike a tailored collar and revers jacket. This is why a roll collar jacket is an interesting type of jacket.

When drafting the roll collar jacket, the fit around the neck line is important ; Another area is the so-called roll or fold line to the central front and how this line moves into the central front line with buttons. There is a certain roll here too but in this article, the accent is on the actual roll collar.

The basic rules for creating the roll collar are 1) the extension of the center front line by the amount of the button stand. 2) The shoulder neck point is extended outwards approximately inch or .7cm. 3) Establish your break point or the end of the roll collar and join this new shoulder neck point to the breakpoint. This is the fold line and in jackets which use soft silks and cottons, this fold line may have the appearance of a curving line rather than a straight fold line. 4) Remember that the flat bodice patterns are for a t-shirt neckline thus the shoulder neck point must be altered for the jacket and this is why the shoulder line was extended by approximately .7cm.

Note the fold line of the jacket. This can be called a roll line too because of the way the fabric rolls to create the collar and this roll line ends at the breakpoint. This fold line extends up around the neck line and it must roll and sit in a suitable way around the neck. When drafting the roll collar, the neck area is an area where fit is important. Look at the way the roll collar rolls around the neck. A natural stand collar is created but this fact is not overtly important. Fabric control is important in the roll collar and it seems to be the case that the fabric rolls naturally to create the stand.

Thus the shoulder line is extended by circa 2.1 cm. When the breakpoint is established, you can draw the shape of the collar. A roll collar is not at all a wide collar. Indeed it would be difficult to roll the collar properly if the collar was too wide. Thus mark out the shape of the roll collar from the break point to the shoulder line. The break line is the mirror line and you trace this shape to the other side of the break or fold line.

So we have the roll collar to the shoulder line and now the aim is to get the proper shape and roll at the back. Some type of stand is necessary. However this stand seems to be created naturally. Note the roll of the collar extending from the breakpoint all around the neck. Such is the fluidity of the roll collar or the potential fluidity of the design that you can ask if there should be a central back seam for the collar. In these notes there is a back seam but the roll collar creates such a fluid look where such a seam may not be always necessary.

There is a new shoulder neck point. This creates better fit at the neck. From this point, extend the break-line or fold-line by half the back neck measurement plus an amount for seam allowance i.e .7 cm. This is the center back point that is reached. Measure back 1.3cm from this point. This is a new center back line. From this point you create the collar. Draw a perpendicular line to this point, 2.54 cm and 5cm to the front. Now the aim is to join this line to the roll collar itself. If necessary extend the line so that you can join this line to the collar line.

Proper shaping is important at the back to connect the back area with the front collar area. The fall of the collar, which you can measure on the pattern, when the collar reaches the shoulder line, must continue around to the back. And the fold line must continue around the neck to create the roll collar.

Fireplace design Ideas

Are you trying to find some inspiring information about fireplace design ideas? There are some basic elements to any fireplace that are generally addressed in turn, in order to come up with a complete fireplace design. There are three main components to any fireplace design.

The three primary components to fireplace design include the hearth, the firebox and the type of opening that is employed between the firebox and the room in which the fireplace is located. The hearth is the area outside of the firebox, in general. The firebox is the area in which the fire itself will be burned.

Hearths

Let's first talk about hearths. A hearth may be flush with the floor, raised above the floor, or sunk down lower than the floor. Additionally, there may be no hearth to speak of at all. In these cases the firebox should be at least two inches above the floor, as the hearth is what helps protect the floor from the heat of the fire.

Another type of hearth may include hearth seats of various kinds. The most traditional and popular type of fireplace with hearth seats are the kinds that feature simply two blocks on either side of the firebox opening.

Fireboxes

As with the hearth types, the different kinds of fireboxes generally have mainly to do with the height relative to the floor and / or hearth. There are raised fireboxes, flush fireboxes that are the same height as the floor, and there are dropped fireboxes that are somewhat lower than the hearth and / or floor in front of the fireplace.

Fireplace Openings

Of course the most widely utilized type of fireplace opening is the rectangular opening. Generally, a rectangular opening will be just that: rectangular in shape. However, even with rectangular openings, the sides typically flare outward from the firebox toward the face of the fireplace.

There are flat arch top openings where the sides are straight, yet the tope of the opening has a slight arch to the shape. As with the traditional rectangular opening, the sides typically flare outward from the firebox toward the face of the fireplace.

There are full arch fireplace openings where the opening contains no straight lines. These types of fireplace openings have one continuous curve all around the fireplace opening. This is the type of opening you are probably used to seeing in American Southwestern style fireplaces.

There are also corner fireplace openings that allow for there to be two open sides to the fireplace. As the name suggests, a corner opening fireplace is situated in such a way that an entire corner section of the firebox is exposed.

There are U-shaped fireplace openings where the firebox is exposed on three sides, the front, as well as the two side areas. These last two types of fireplace openings will generally produce better heat radiation. If you will be using your fireplace to heat your home, and not merely as decoration these are certainly worth looking into. For images of these various fireplace styles, take a look at http://www.fireplacesnow.com/FireplaceStyles.htm .

The mortgage Industry's Woes, What Does It Mean?

Well... my previous forecast while calling for tightening of guidelines and a resulting vicious circle of too much inventory and not enough buyers has just gotten worse.

What exactly is going on?

Let me start by explaining the hierarchy if the mortgage lending industry. You purchase a home and apply for a mortgage from your local broker or bank. They close the loan through a wholesale lender who funds the loan with their money. The wholesale lender then packages your loan with a bunch of other like loans and sells them to a Wall Street firm or if they are large enough they securitize them themselves and sell them as such in the marketplace. In either case they get their money back plus a small premium over what they paid your broker or bank. Now these mortgage backed securities (MBS) are purchased by large asset funds created by the large wall street firms to give their large personal and corporate clients a place to invest their cash, and believe me, there is plenty of cash out their to be invested!

Got it?

Now youve got billions of dollars worth of these exotic loans like pay option ARMs, Stated income, No Doc, etc. at high loan to values ( 95% - 100% ) that were made over the last 5 years sitting in these big asset funds. Now these loans start to adjust, some as little as 2-3% above the original note rate but a lot more are even higher like the case of some pay option ARM's(6-6.5%) above the low rate option.

Now it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out what happened next, right? You guessed it, housing prices stabilized or went down and folks couldnt refinance their way out of the loans so they defaulted and foreclosures rose! Here is where the vicious cycle comes in, the more loans that defaulted, the tighter the guidelines got because the secondary market ( Wall Street ) wouldnt buy these riskier loans and then more loans defaulted and the guidelines got tighter, and so on, and so on.

Back to our friends with the large asset funds that are chock full of these types of loans.

Those loans that defaulted are no longer making their payments and if no payments are being made, no interest is being paid (which is the funds source of income from these loans) so these loans have no value, they are non performing assets. On top of that the market no longer accepts these types of loans so the funds cant even sell the loans that havent defaulted yet! Oops!

Now this is a somewhat simplified version, I could get into more complexities but, for the purposes of this forecast and the broad audience it reaches, I think you all can get it.

O.K. what does all this mean to you the consumer? Quite simply, you will have to have more skin in the game ( down payment or equity ), document your income and your assets and have a middle credit score of at least 620 (680 or higher will get you a better rate).

Oh, youll still be able to get a stated income loan but it wont be for anymore than 80% of value and you will have to have the assets commensurate with your stated income as determined by the lenders guidelines.

As for the pay option ARMs, theyre dead and dont hold your breath waiting for their return!

Expect these conditions to exist for the next 12 to 18 months. Values across the country should stabilize or begin rising by then.

But hey, if youve got the bling there are going to be some good deals out there as people will be willing to unload their properties at a lose rather than go into foreclosure.

As with any other part of our economy the consumer always pays the price so, if you are looking for a mortgage you will probably pay a rate that is a .250% - .375% higher than if these conditions did not exist.

My advice if you have an adjustable mortgage that has gone up recently, go into conservative mode and try not to take on any new debt. These conditions will smooth out in the next year to a year and a half, and in that time you probably will only see one more rate increase that should be smaller than the last one.

Thats as complex as it gets folks!

Warm Regards,

JT

I am a 15 year veteran of the mortgage origination business whose experience spans large financial institutions to Brokers. I have seen so many people(in positions that one would associate with intelligence) get led by slick talking originators into over paying for a mortgage!
